When Jean Ferran's grandfather first came to Cairanne, he took one look at the price of land on the rocky footprint of Cairanne and decided to buy what no one else wanted ? hillside vineyards at 1,000 feet in elevation. This was the first step in the ascension of this estate to the position it now holds in the southern Rhône hierarchy. The most recent step? Jean Ferran hiring his close friend Philippe Cambie as a consulting enologist in 1999. Since then, Ferran has been applying the Cambie philosophy (drop fruit, pick late, perform a second sort in the cellar) and taking full advantage of his old-vine Grenache and Syrah holdings.
