($135) Opaque purple. Expansive, floral-accented nose displays a kaleidoscopic array of dark berry preserve aromas, along with strong violet, incense and smoky mineral qualities. Lush and palate-staining but improbably lively, offering sweet boysenberry and plum liqueur flavors that reach every corner of the palate. Supple tannins come up with air but are quickly buried under the mass of sweet dark berry fruit. The floral quality comes back strong on the finish, which features lingering notes of licorice, fruitcake and smoky minerals. I'm not sure how this will age but I doubt that anybody who enjoys this style will care too much as it is pretty stunning right now. These vines were planted in 1912 and are on their own roots.
