In 1982, the Champagne house Louis Roederer searched the cool, foggy Anderson Valley in Mendocino County for a place to plant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir suitable for making California sparkling wines of delicacy and precision. They found what they were looking for—580 acres of well drained soil and a cool climate to boot.
