89 Points | International Wine Cellar , December 2010

Bright ruby-red. Perfumed aromas of blackberry and licorice lifted by violet. Suave, dry and lively in the mouth, with nicely delineated flavors of dark berries, licorice and chocolate. Builds nicely on the back half, finishing with serious broad tannins and noteworthy energy. Very sophisticated, varietally accurate Argentine malbec for the price.

This is my type of tongue tickler! Mind-expanding Malbec, makes me never wanna come back "up north" to quote Borges: "The truth is that we live out our lives putting off all that can be put off; perhaps we all know deep down that we are immortal and that sooner or later all men will do and know all things." That may be true, but either way, i'll be contented to sit here on the dock a' the bay sippin my 2009 Fabre Montmayou Malbec Barrel Selection Patagonia. Forgive the pun, but it's like shooting fish in a barrel. - Mikey the Anarchist Librarian

Loving all things Patagonian I had tremendous expectations for this wine. I actually did NOT expect them to be fulfilled but this is one beautiful windswept island of a Malbec! Rich and deep, fruity and just crisp enough to inspire the next mouthful every time...lovely nose of currants and cream and a beautiful velvet mouthfeel. Incredibly versatile culinary accompaniment!
Spectacular Malbec

By far and away the best Malbec I've ever tasted. Very rich, opulent and unfolds smoothly over time.
Great value

Great nose, smooth finish, and really opened up after decanting and drinking over the course of a few hours. So much flavor!!
Terrific value for pure Malbec!

I bought both the Vinas Viejas and the Patagonian barrel selection. I am laying down the former but this is the second vintage I have picked up of the barrel selection and each time it was delicious, concentrated, well made and an amazing value.

Terrific wine for the price. Wineaccess had introduced us to Fabre Montmayou wines earlier this year so we were not surprised.
Nice wine for the $, good finish only lacked the heat on the end. Smooth tannins

This is a good representation of the Malbec wine. It might need a few more years in the bottle but doubt I can keep from drinking it all before spring. Malbec wine has been a good value in the past but I guess the word is getting out as I have seen the prices on these rising over the past year.
One of the tastiest Malbecs around!

This wine has a great nose just hinting at the flavors you are soon to experience. And the wine definitely lives up to that nose. Great with a steak.

I liked the 2008 and I like this year's too. Interesting taste--hint of anise? not especially smooth, but very easy to drink, and a great value.
Wonderful start but a bit sharp on the finish

I really enjoyed the aromatic bouquet of this wine. lending to an anxious anticipation of the taste. Entry is luscious and fruit filled with slightly strong tannins. My only knock was that the finish seemed just a bit short, although it seemed to improve as it opened up a bit in the glass. All told, an excellent value for the price.

vibrant, intense flavors, relatively smooth given youth, but left me with moderate hangover through night and next morning- after 2.5 glasses with dinner and evening.
Big disappointment

Lackluster. Lots of good color. Not much finish. Didn't even taste like a Malbec. OK table wine, maybe.
Disappointed!

This was a disappointment versus expectations based on the glowing write-up. Primitive and off-putting, lacking character and depth. Thankfully, the Reserve malbec included in the sampler was much better.

About Argentina

Until the early 1990s, Argentina's wine industry was focused inward, as the local market's thirst was sufficient to absorb the huge quantities of everyday drinking wine produced there. But with per-capita consumption in the domestic market in sharp decline since the mid-1970s, Argentina's wine producers realized that they had to look to export markets to remain in business, and winemaking in Argentina began its transformation.

Malbec

The Malbec grape may have originated in southwest France, where it still is grown under the name Cot. However, the grape's international profile has surged not because of what's going on in France, but rather because of current trends in Argentina.
