About Luna Vineyards
Founded in 1995, this 40 acre estate at the south end of the Silverado Trail is more reminiscent of Tuscany than of its Napa neighbors. Planted to Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Tocai Friulano along with some traditional California varieties, Luna Vineyards bucks the trend when it comes to the mediocre Italian varietal wines produced these days.
2008 Luna Vineyards Sangiovese Napa Valley
Producer: Luna Vineyards
Style: Red Wine
Grape Type: Sangiovese
Origin: California
Region: Napa
88-89 Points | International Wine Cellar , May/June 2010
($25; the largest single bottling of the winery, now entirely from Napa Valley fruit; just 10% new oak) Medium red. Cherry, redcurrant and floral aromas are complicated by a whiff of soil. Offers good sweetness and breadth to its spicy, bright red fruit flavors. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and a hint of mocha. The fruit is mostly from Game Farm Vineyard in Oakville, which McMahon says features "rocky Tuscan soil." This will be bottled in July.
