($50) Vivid ruby. Intense aromas of black raspberry, cherry-cola and spicecake, with a sexy floral overtone. Fresh, sappy, palate-staining red fruit flavors are accompanied by notes of mocha and star anise, plus a late hint of candied rose. This structured wine is showing good complexity already, and finishes with strong grip and spicy persistence. Green told me that the Balcombe wines are the only ones that don't see any Allier oak as "the fruit needs something stronger, like Nevers." Incidentally, Green and Anderson only work with a single barrel-maker, Cadus.
