($19) Saturated ruby. Deep aromas of blackberry, licorice, violet, tobacco and espresso; smells a lot like a cabernet. Then deep, faintly bitter and tactile, showing a sappy core of dark fruit and good energy even if it seems a bit youthfully imploded today. Finishes with firm backbone and sweeter red fruit character. This needs a little more bottle age.

While the grape is currently grown throughout the world, the most elegant Syrahs still come from the Northern Rhone valley, particularly the appellations of Côte Rôtie, Cornas, and Hermitage.
