Glass-staining ruby.  Wild, pungent scents of redcurrant, cherry pit, anise and musky herbs, plus a hint of fresh tobacco leaf.  Sappy, spicy, penetrating red fruit flavors give way to a darker blackcurrant quality in the middle palate and pick up a violet pastille element.  Nicely concentrated and precise, finishing with impressive grip and a long, subtly sweet finish.  I’d let this wine age for at least another three years.

About Beaujolais

Made from the Gamay grape, the red wines of Beaujolais are mostly exuberantly fruity and brisk wines that are often served lightly chilled for added refreshment. There is also a small amount of white Beaujolais, made from Chardonnay, but little of this is exported to the U.S. Today, the overwhelming majority of Beaujolais production is controlled by negociants, of whom Georges Duboeuf is the undisputed king.
