About Beckmen Vineyards

When winemaker Steve Beckmen returned from Italy in 1997, he was convinced that his family's recently purchased hillside in Santa Barbara County would be perfect for growing Rhône varietals. His father Tom was skeptical, but since then, Purisima Mountain Vineyard has established itself as one of the finest sources of Syrah and Grenache in the Central Coast.

($55) Glass-staining purple. Deep, smoky aromas of cassis, blackberry and cola, with notes of tobacco and black tea adding a serious mien. Densely packed and youthful, with sweet dark fruit flavors and a hint of bitter cherry pit. A suggestion of black olive comes up with air and weaves through a long, sappy, gently tannic finish.

Purisma Perfction? Pretty much!

Initially an intense but monolithic nose consisting of mostly black fruits. Huge in the mouth with fruit and black pepper, but mostly one dimensional. Very smooth LONG finish; at least a minute. After 10 minutes in the glass, some smoke appears on the nose to join the fruit and seems to carry both bacon fat and road tar nuances. At 15 minutes a floral note joins in. The mouth feel is very plush with smooth, coating tannins and very good acidity. Some red fruits join the black ones. This is just beautiful now and would be wonderful with any grilled red meat and possibly even chicken with garlic and herbs. Probably not perfect, but close enough!

Nice juice! Went well with a variety of grilled items and I just kept filling the glass...

About California

It is remarkable that an industry essentially less than a half-century old could capture the attention of the American wine-buying public to the degree that California has. Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Syrah

While the grape is currently grown throughout the world, the most elegant Syrahs still come from the Northern Rhone valley, particularly the appellations of Côte Rôtie, Cornas, and Hermitage. Here, steep, terraced vineyards help produce full-bodied, intense, tannic wines loaded with white pepper and red fruit. In the vineyard, Syrah is largely cooperative- vines are productive, but not overly vigorous. Skins are thick, helping the grape...
