About Beckmen Vineyards

When winemaker Steve Beckmen returned from Italy in 1997, he was convinced that his family's recently purchased hillside in Santa Barbara County would be perfect for growing Rhône varietals. His father Tom was skeptical, but since then, Purisima Mountain Vineyard has established itself as one of the finest sources of Syrah and Grenache in the Central Coast.

(45% grenache, 34% syrah, 14% mourvedre and 7% counoise):  Bright violet color.  Aromas of dark berries and cola, with a subtle note of peppery spices and a hint of mocha.  Deeply pitched cherry and blackberry flavors show a slight bitterness and a touch of cracked pepper.  Finishes with good grip and length, leaving a spicy cherry note behind.

Not expecting this to be this good for the price. Fresh and rich on the palate. Can actually drink as a cocktail which more and more is hard to find in CA reds. Kudos to the people at Beckmen for making a very good affordable wine. Highly recommend.
Beckmen is Back!!!!!!!

I fell out of love with the Beckmen wines years ago after a string of so-so vintages. But I had heard good things from coworkers. I am here to say, this wine rekindled our affair. Tons of purple fruit but not dried out like many Cali blends. Priced well enough for an everyday red...well, at least for our table.

I'm very pleased with this wine, very approachable, wonderful dark fruit nose and palate, some wet stone coming thru, enjoyable finish.

Medium bodied, harsh tannins, I would not purchase again and would not recommend.
Too much Grenache

Just too flabby for my taste. In my opinion the best Southern Rhones are those that add just enough Grenache to counter the sometimes severe characteristics of warm-climate Syrah. Those that are mediocre use too much Grenache and end up bland and lacking in acid. Unfortunately that seems to be the exact trap that Beckmen has fallen into here. While time may counter the flabbiness, the first two bottles disappointed. Not nearly enough backbone to stand up to grilled sirloin, or even roasted pork loin.
