About Beckmen Vineyards

When winemaker Steve Beckmen returned from Italy in 1997, he was convinced that his family's recently purchased hillside in Santa Barbara County would be perfect for growing Rhône varietals. His father Tom was skeptical, but since then, Purisima Mountain Vineyard has established itself as one of the finest sources of Syrah and Grenache in the Central Coast.

Inky violet color.  Pungent dark berries and licorice on the slow-to-open nose.  Bitter cherry and cassis flavors are complicated by black pepper and black cardamom, with a hint of camphor on the back end.  Very young and in need of patience.  The finish is firm, gripping and nicely persistent if a bit clenched today.

Full flavor syrah at budget price

Terrific deep-red fruit flavor, balanced acidity and smooth (non-existent) tannins. Great drinking now, but expect will continue to improve with some time in the cellar. Great value at this price point.

After six months in the cellar, this has gained a bit of weight and is extremely well balanced. It was perfect last night with a pork loin roast in a wine sauce. Ought to be 4.5.

A youthful, lurid purple but not completely opaque. On the nose, red/black fruit with a baked bread note. Opulent fruit, light tannin, good acidity, but not a heavy wine. After 1.5 hours decant, a little more assertive on the nose and smoother on the palate, suggesting it will reward some cellaring, which I'll try to give it but guarantee nothing. Nice Syrah!

ugh! I've bought, cellared and loved prior Beckman Vineyard wines but this was so bad I'm pouring a case of it down sink. Damn shame, too.
