90 Points | Stephen Tanzer's IWC - March 2012

Very pale cherry-red.  Subtle perfume of strawberry, cherry, wild herbs and fresh mint.  Supple, spicy and seamless, with lovely intensity and a saline, tactile umami quality that buffers the wine's dryness.  Seems less exotic and cooler than the 2009 version, even though the earlier growing season was warmer.  Refreshing and perfumed on the aftertaste, finishing with a light dusting of tannins, a sexy suggestion of cinnamon and sneaky length.

A surprise being a "light" red.

I stereotype Italian reds as being a darker or more robust. As a neophyte, my comments; It was very nice.
Like a first growth burgundy

Medium bodied, floral on the nose, red fruit on the palate, and a hint of spice on a very long finish. The first bottle was an anomaly. The rest have been wonderful.
Good With Hearty Ministrone
by RATKEWITCH11324513
I tried this wine with a hearty ministrone and was pleasantly surprised at how well it paired. The sweetness of the vegatables was present in the wine as well as a pleasant, slightly bitter edge to the finish. Although 13% the wine did not have any heaviness and in fact, was light in color and mouth feel.

About Italy

Italy, like France, offers a world of wine styles within a single country: dry Italian white wines ranging from lively and minerally to powerful and full-bodied; cheap and cheerful Italian red wines in both a cooler, northern style and a richer, warmer southern style; structured, powerful reds capable of long aging in bottle; sparkling wines; sweet wines and dessert wines.
