About Beckmen Vineyards

When winemaker Steve Beckmen returned from Italy in 1997, he was convinced that his family's recently purchased hillside in Santa Barbara County would be perfect for growing Rhône varietals. His father Tom was skeptical, but since then, Purisima Mountain Vineyard has established itself as one of the finest sources of Syrah and Grenache in the Central Coast.

Saturated ruby.  Dark berries, violet, sassafras and woodsmoke on the fragrant nose.  Pliant blackberry and boysenberry flavors provide very good palate coverage and pick up spiciness with air.  Finishes sappy and long, with repeating dark berry and smoke notes.  This is already drinking very well but also has the depth to age.

I don't know what's in the air up in the Purisima mountains, but they are producing some top notch wines at bargain basement prices. Beckmen's Purisima Grenache and Syrah are out of this world. This Syrah is excellent. If you see anything from Beckmen labeled "Purisima", jump on it!

Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Syrah

While the grape is currently grown throughout the world, the most elegant Syrahs still come from the Northern Rhone valley, particularly the appellations of Côte Rôtie, Cornas, and Hermitage. Here, steep, terraced vineyards help produce full-bodied, intense, tannic wines loaded with white pepper and red fruit. In the vineyard, Syrah is largely cooperative- vines are productive, but not overly vigorous. Skins are thick, helping the grape...
