About Chateau de la Maltroye
Old-timers in Chassagne remember times when the wines and vineyards here weren't nearly so coveted. When the Cournut family purchased the estate in 1940, the 6.5 acre plot behind the house was a vegetable garden. Today, the beautiful vines that run 200 meters down the hill behind the Chateau make up the priceless Maltroye 1er Cru holding, offering wines that sell for $70-$100/bottle.

Region: Burgundy
Appellation: Cote de Beaune

Ripe peach and smoky oak on the nose. (Cournut uses about 30% new oak for his premier crus but showed me samples from new barrels, as he felt they were less reduced after the recent sulfiting and thus more representative.) Expressive flavors of yellow peach, menthol and wet stone, nicely firmed by an edge of acidity. Finishes with very good persistence.
