About Joseph Phelps
Joseph Phelps Vineyards was born out of owner Joseph Phelps's love for the Napa Valley, which he discovered while his construction firm was building a winery near St. Helena. Today, Joseph Phelps Vineyards produces several wines that are 100% estate grown, including the flagship Insignia, a lush, highly concentrated blend of Bordeaux varietals.
92-94 Points | International Wine Cellar , May/June 2013
Bright ruby-red. Expressive nose offers blackberry, licorice, leather and mocha. Silky and suave if not particularly sweet, with cassis and bitter chocolate flavors nicely framed by an edge of acidity. Finishes with substantial tooth-dusting tannins but has enough mid-palate creaminess to stand up to its structure. Very pretty wine, if not as deep as the 2010 Backus. The team here compares 2011 to 2005 for its herbal, angular quality, but today I find this offering strong for its vintage.
