About Kistler Vineyards

Steve Kistler's rich, Burgundy-style Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, from a series of ideally situated vineyards all around Sonoma County, have long been favorites among collectors and restaurant clients. The best bottlings have proven to be excellent mid-term agers and are among the richest and most complex Chardonnays made anywhere—the key is low-tech, hands-off winemaking that makes the most of the particular vineyard site plus what each vintage has to offer.

95 Points | Stephen Tanzer's IWC - May/June 2013

Green-tinged yellow.  Precise aromas of orange zest, fresh pineapple, iodine, white flowers and smoky lees.  Spicy, high-pitched and penetrating, with palate-staining citrus and orchard fruit flavors and pronounced minerality.  Shows outstanding tension and focus on the long, smoke- and floral-accented finish.

I did not taste this wine upon its initial appearance on the market so I speculate that it was bigger earlier on in terms of body/fruit (reminded me of noble rot, botrytis as found in late harvested German riesling so 'yay'). Now as I taste it, it is a fantastically rich, drinking now and probably a little better in the recent past with its great alcohol presence (reminded me of cognac).....which, as we all know, half of what we taste is what we smell and the alcohol in this wine is a welcome component of this wine's impact. No 'sophomoric law school grads' are allowed to drink this wine out of plastic cups as they will miss this wine's greatest strength.

As the sun heats up the vineyards and mountainsides of Napa Valley to the north, the rising hot air draws cool air and fog over Carneros from the ba

The best Chardonnays in the world continue to arrive from the region where the grape first emerged: the chalk, clay, and limestone vineyards of Burgundy and Chablis. While the origins of the grape were disputed for many years, with some speculating that the grape came all the way from the Middle East, DNA researchers at the University of California-Davis proved in 1999 that Chardonnay actually developed...
