About Peter Michael Winery

Appropriately enough, Sir Peter Michael, an Englishman who made his name in electronics, established his vineyard in Sonoma County's Knights Valley. From the moment he purchased the property in 1982, Sir Michael has insisted upon an Old-World approach to New World wine. Terroir is paramount here, along with elegance in favor of overstatement.

(made from 67% cabernet sauvignon, 17% cabernet franc, 14% merlot and 2% petit verdot; 70% new oak):  Dark purple.  Heady, floral-accented aromas of dark berry preserves, vanilla, mocha and black truffle, with a smoky overtone.  Sappy, palate-staining blackberry and cassis flavors are lifted and braced by zesty mineral and spice notes and show excellent clarity.  Becomes sweeter with air and finishes with superb energy, focus and persistence, with just a whisper of dusty tannins.

Moving slightly south, Cabernet Sauvignon meets Merlot in roughly equal proportions in the red wines of Graves. In both of these Bordeaux regions, the top bottles...
