In 1977, David Graves and Richard Ward met for the first time in a oenology class at UC Davis. Both Pinot Noir lovers, they decided to start bottling their own. By 1981 they had released their first vintage, 2000 cases from purchased Carneros grapes.

(14.5% alcohol, vs. 13.5% for the regular Carneros bottling): Full, rich yellow. Subdued aromas of peach, clove and nutty, vanillin oak. Broader than the Carneros release but a bit youthfully wound-up and less silky today. Sound acidity gives shape to the soft citrus and peach flavors. Still a bit hard-edged: will this wine gain in pliancy with a year or three in bottle?
