88(+?) Points | Stephen Tanzer's IWC - July/August 2013

(14% alcohol):  Garnet-tinged red.  Aromatic herbs and faded flowers dominate the nose, with hints of red cherry and dried cranberry emerging with aeration.  On the palate, clove, cinnamon and menthol complement dusty red cherry and licorice flavors.  The tannins are slightly grainy on the mildly bitter, moderately long, warm finish.  This improved with aeration but it strikes me as a bit tired and lacking the energy and grip of Altesino's best bottlings.  I actually liked the 2007 normale a lot more when I tasted it last year.
