Inky purple.  Pungent dark fruit liqueur, cherry-cola and potpourri on the deeply scented nose, with hints of smoky minerals and black pepper adding complexity.  Lush cassis and cherry compote flavors show impressive power, with exotic candied violet and Indian spice qualities building in the glass.  Dusty tannins add grip to a long, sweet, and penetrating finish.  A rich and lively wine.

Remarkable Syrah

This was a pop and pour from a cool cellar. Initially, the nose was savory, with herbs, underbrush and road tar/bacon fat notes. But on first taste, the palate exploded in fruit and floral notes. After a little time for air and a bit of warming, the nose and palate aligned. The wine is intense and bold, yet focused and elegant with no rough edges and a long smooth finish. It's outstanding and very engaging in its youth, so it will be hard to resist and see how it ages. Very, very nice wine!

Powerful consumer interest in California wine is driven by two major factors. The more obvious reason is that California's best wines, which come from grapes grown in...

Syrah

While the grape is currently grown throughout the world, the most elegant Syrahs still come from the Northern Rhone valley, particularly the appellations of Côte Rôtie, Cornas, and Hermitage. Here, steep, terraced vineyards help produce full-bodied, intense, tannic wines loaded with white pepper and red fruit. In the vineyard, Syrah is largely cooperative- vines are productive, but not overly vigorous. Skins are thick, helping the grape...
