About Joseph Phelps

Joseph Phelps Vineyards was born out of owner Joseph Phelps's love for the Napa Valley, which he discovered while his construction firm was building a winery near St. Helena. Today, Joseph Phelps Vineyards produces several wines that are 100% estate grown, including the flagship Insignia, a lush, highly concentrated blend of Bordeaux varietals.

93 Points | International Wine Cellar , May/June 1998

Very saturated ruby-red. Perfumed, altogether finer aromas of black fruits, violet, licorice and toffee; whiff of animal fur. Lovely, mouthfilling dark berry flavors are given shape and freshness by lively acids. Rather large structure and impressive sweetness of fruit for the vintage. Finishes quite fine and long, with lovely, even tannins. This is superb, and may ultimately equal the '94, which I rated 93 in a recent tasting.

I got this for $70. It is an excellent value at $70. If this is any indication of what the current bottling taste like, however... they aren't worth $110+...
It just keeps getting better!

I first tasted this wine out of the barrel at the Napa Valley Wine auction several years ago and it was simply fantastic! I believe only one other barrel went for more $$$ at auction than this. Now several years later, the wine has continued to improve. Deep ruby color, an intense nose that jumps out of the glass, and very subtle oak make this my favorite Bordeaux-style blend from California.

About Napa Valley

Napa Valley is the most famous wine-growing area in the U.S. It begins at the base of Mount St. Helena in the north and tapers off some 30 miles to the south into the floodplain where the Napa River enters San Francisco Bay. From Mount St. Helena to the city of Napa, the valley is defined by two north-south ridgelines of the Coast Range Mountains.
