Very youthful, saturated ruby-red color. Penetrating, powerful aromas of roasted plum, cassis, tobacco, earth, truffle, tar and meat, plus a floral topnote. Thick and sweet but sharply delineated, with impressive extract and very strong underlying structure. This is approachable now due to its balance and sheer sweetness of fruit but will go on for another decade or more. Finishing flavors build slowly and linger. Ripe, chewy tannins coat the entire palate. Perhaps better as a meal substitute than as an accompaniment to food.

Spectacular stuff

STILL Very youthful at 22 years into its life and just as saturated and ruby red, possibly, as when Tanzser peered at this as an infant in '98. The aroma is certainly penetrating and fill the head just before filling the mouth. The fruit truely is roasted if not scortched and cassis, truffle are spiced with a pinch of earthy tobacco. This wine matches wonderfully with beef such a grilled rare steak. The wine is light on it's feet, not thick. The tannins present provide a strong chewy backbone to the wine and tell me that this wine will last another decade. It's not quite at it's peak, maybe 3 to 5 years off, but spectacular now. I'm calling it at 96-97 points on my scale. Really impressive.

Tasting this Montelena in it's prime is a great treat...this smooth, rich Cab will last another 20 years.
