About Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin

Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin was founded in 1772 by Philippe Clicquot-Muiron, but it was his daughter-in-law, Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin who would catapult it to greatness. The empire that Madam Clicquot built now includes 360 hectares of vines, including 12 of the 17 Grand Crus in Champagne.

Expert Reviews

96 Points | International Wine Cellar , November/December 2000

Rich, multidimensional, highly aromatic nose of pear, red berries, apple, honey, toast and spice. Extremely rich and concentrated, with its medium to full body leavened by bright citrus notes and compelling minerality. Great inner-mouth aromas. Conveys an impression of powerful yet remarkably fine raw materials. The spicy finish offers exceptional persistence and richness.

I was concerned that the 1990 has matured and some have said it seems tired, however I just had a properly cellared bottle that was rich, complex & flavorful and still very fresh & lively. Cellaring conditions really matter for this fantastic vintage that has quite a few years to go.

HUGE, almost creamy, champagne. Ultra-complex. Maybe a bit too full-bodied for some, but wow, is it elegant. Does dances around Dom Perignon.

About France

France is the fountainhead of the grape varieties most craved by North American wine drinkers: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. In fact, these grapes are widely referred to as "international" varieties because they have been planted and imitated all over the world.
