About Chateau Latour

If Lafite is renowned for elegance, Latour is prized for power. Vines were first planted on the site in the fourteenth century, but Latour's reputation stems from the late part of the seventeenth century, when the estate was inherited by Alexandre de Ségur. In recent years, no finer wine has been made in Bordeaux, for Latour displays an uncanny combination of deep color; Cabernet-dominated flavors of dark berries, licorice and minerals; the finest oak that money can buy; and great length on the aftertaste. Typically, the blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

There was a time when it could take half a century for a Latour from a great vintage to mature. You can see it with this 1970, the one wine in the tasting that might still benefit from further aging. A full bodied, brawny wine with massive structure, but balanced by large doses of spicy fruit, the wine has extraordinary depth, and a long very drawn out finish. An old fashioned wine that takes decades to really show its magnificence, it is made for people prepared to lay it for their children, and probably their children's children. 96 points

Full medium-deep red. Medicinal, austere nose of plum and chocolate; slightly off wood note. Fat and plump, but the fruit is somewhat suppressed and the finish somewhat dried by the off nose. Still a very satisfying drink, but not up to typical bottles of this outstanding wine.

Drank this wine on New Year's Eve at a friend's house. Can't remember the year, either 1982 or 1983. Had had quite a bit to drink before then and admittedly was not altogether with it at the time. However, one sip of this brought me back to total awareness. One word to describe it is 'mammoth'. Has not tasted anything like it since.
