About Chateau Latour

If Lafite is renowned for elegance, Latour is prized for power. Vines were first planted on the site in the fourteenth century, but Latour's reputation stems from the late part of the seventeenth century, when the estate was inherited by Alexandre de Ségur. In recent years, no finer wine has been made in Bordeaux, for Latour displays an uncanny combination of deep color; Cabernet-dominated flavors of dark berries, licorice and minerals; the finest oak that money can buy; and great length on the aftertaste. Typically, the blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.

Deep ruby-red color. More expressive aromas of crystallized dark berries, dark chocolate and animal fur. Lush and sweet; thick but delineated. Wonderfully concentrated. This, too, seems rather withdrawn today, but the strength of material is clear to see. Finishes with firm tannins and explosive fruit that goes on and on.

5.0 of 5 Stars Peak Experience
By RobG, January 22, 2001
You don't have to be a wine expert to be able to see, smell and taste the difference in this fabled wine and vintage. Outstanding taste and structure. This is one wine that if I could have access to an affordable, available supply, I could easily develop an addiction to. Hope to be fortunate enough to taste again in a few years to see how well it ages.
5.0 of 5 Stars Off the charts

I just cracked my first bottle of Latour 1995. This wine is phenomenal. Intense, deep purple color, incredibly concentrated and long on the palate. My sense is that this wine will drink very well in 2 years and will continue to age for 20. Bordeaux doesn't get much better than this.

...but not what we expected. Possible that the bottle was a little off.
4.0 of 5 Stars Excellent, but...

Opened one of my '95 Chateau Latours recently. It's a great wine, but not specifically to my tastes. I prefer St. Emilion and Pomerol more than most other Bordeaux. My main objection to Pauillac is the minerality, which in this Latour is prominent. If that is your preference, then you will be well rewarded. Also, it may have been just this bottle, but a fine sediment is beginning to precipitate out...normal, of course, but prepare yourself.
