(4.7 g/l total acidity; 13.4% alcohol):  Deep ruby-red.  Still youthfully closed but highly complex nose hints at cassis, minerals, gunflint and Oriental spices.  Quite clean and juicy, boasting lovely precision and size to its flavors of small dark berries, smoky plum, coffee and minerals.  This pure, long wine finishes with enticingly soft flavors of red cherry and marzipan.  Though rich and opulent,  this graceful, seamless wine can still age effortlessly.  Maybe the best Lynch-Bages of the last 30 years.

As you can see from the reviews there is a variance of opinion on this bottle. For me, this was the very best wine that I have ever tasted, including the 82, 90, 86, 2000, 82 Lafite, and a number of other stars. The aromas were sensational, the body massive and it was very complex and rich. Incredible!

Maybe the prettiest wine, outside of Burgundy, I've ever tasted, impeccably balanced, extremely nuanced, gorgeous nose and tons of cab flavors but all work together in perfect harmony, wish I could afford more.

I took this wine to a wine tasting party with a good of people considered and expert in wine. Well when this bottle was opened, peoples jaw dropped. This wine is so smooth with no after taste. I may be a beginner in wine, but this one took the cake! An A+ for sure.
Who needs a First Growth?

Lynch Bages is overlooked quite often when it comes down to selecting fine Bordeaux. This wine is massive, yet elegant. Jean-Michel Cazes created a superstar with this...... Very few Lynch Bages will rival this, not even the 1982. I have tasted most of the past 25 vintages, and I place this with the 1990 and 1986 as Cazes' finest. Do not overlook the 1995 and 1996 - they express the elegance, balance and style a Bordeaux should have, and their prices are still reasonable compared to Lafite, Latour, and Haut Brion!
Tanzer nails Lynch Bages

It's amazing how well Stephen describes the '89 Lynch. He nails it in every aspect. The only thing I could add is, I didn't finish the whole bootle the first night. I got to enjoy it again after the bottle had been opened for 24hrs, and it really opened up. Didn't seemed so tight. I have had this wine numerous times over the years and it fells like it is going through a sullen state. Great potential!! Dr. Wineman

The 1989 is massive and is elegant, but it has the stuffings/tannin stucture that has yet to open up all the way. The aromatics after decanting were quite worth opening this beauty anyway..

I cannot agree with the 5 star rating of the 1989 Lynch-Bages. In our recent tasting of 18 vintages LB the 1989 had a youthful colour, good structure and length, but it was relatively straightforeward without much complexity, somewhat one-dimensional, without the great depth and intensity for 5 stars. The 1989 Grand Puy Lacoste as well as the 1990 Lynch Bages HAD all these attributes (on that evening) the 1989 LB was lacking, both merriting the 5 stars definitely ! Gerhard Praesent
