In the early 18th century, Jean Francois de Pontet, Royal Governor of the Medoc, purchased several vineyards and united them under the banner of Pontet. Today, this Pauillac Chateau is owned by cognac magnate Guy Tesseron. His son Alfred manages the 80 hectare vineyard.

Saturated deep ruby color. Explosive, superripe aromas of black raspberry, lead pencil and sweet oak. Velvety-sweet and pungently oaky in the mouth, with a firm supporting spine of acidity giving the wine a vibrant, sappy quality. Finishes very long, with substantial but lush tannins. Potentially the finest vintage yet from this estate. This wine will be bottled with alcohol in the 13% range, says Tesseron, who points out that only minimal chaptalization was called for in this exceptionally ripe year for Medoc cabernet.

A superior Medoc for a song.

I have tried this wine twice since purchase at release. If you happen across any for a good price it is a steal for what is in the bottle. This is a structured, hefty wine that as ST correctly says is primary. It really showcases how incredibly excellent the cabernet was in 1996. IMO this wine will evolve slowly but in 10-15 years it will blossom into an outstanding claret. This offers far more potential than the current CA cab offerings. Who would have thought that the 96 Bordeaux would have turned into a bargain???? I give it five stars based upon it being a A/A- wine at a good price from an excellent vintage with an outstanding future.

The highly extracted, deep garnet 1996 Pontet-Canet flaunts a dynamite nose of black cherry, blackberry, smoke, roasted walnut, Indian spice, tree bark, earth, incense, pencil shavings, rose and berry coulis that keeps you coming back for more. In the mouth, the wine shows off it blackberry, spicy cherry, smoke, vanilla and nut oil. The tannins have now softened nicely and are in perfect harmony with the acids. Very refined, the 96' epitomizes classic Bordeaux! Drink with garlic-rubbed grilled veal chops. (94/100)
