In 1983, when Bill Harlan bought an estate in a steep, forested area of Oakville, his aim was to create a Napa Valley First Growth. Whether he has come that far is open to argument, but he certainly has come close.

Deep red-ruby, with some development at the rim. Flamboyant aromas of currant, tobacco, smoked meat and animal fur. Silky on entry, then wonderfully sweet but energetic, with remarkably complex flavors of dark fruits, graphite minerality, hot rocks, leather and smoked meat. Very suave in texture. Finishes with substantial but sweet tannins, a distinctly wild character and outstanding mineral persistence. This is even better than I remember and must be one of the two or three best California reds of the vintage.
