95 Points | International Wine Cellar , July/August 2002

($230-$275) Full ruby-red. Wild, exotic aromas of crystallized redcurrant, leather, tobacco and minerals; distinctly exotic, even overripe. Then lush, sweet and opulent, with an atypically velvety texture for Montrose. But extremely young and structured, finishing with powerful tannins and great grip and length. Almost California-like in style; in Bordeaux, they'd refer to the fruit expression of this wine as "original," which is not necessarily high praise. Drink 2008 through 2030.

Just a little barnyard at first, but after a few moments, an explosion af sweet fruit. Super long finish. Aromas and palate reminded me of 94' dominus, just not as in your face ripe. Dont get me wrong, this is one big puppy. 5 stars easily.
Wow! Great wine.

My wife and I are big Montrose fans, and this one didn't disappoint. Parker's 100 point rating may be a bit much, but it is definately in the upper 90's. Dried cherry, tobacoo, vanilla -- it is all good! However, I will say that we like the 1986 Montrose more.
