Located at the northern end of San Luis Obispo County, Paso Robles has enjoyed more than 100 years of viticultural production. It is a large area (over 600,000 acres) whose focal point is the town of Paso Robles and whose vineyards are most often found in low-lying land and foothills. Paso Robles is bordered on the west by the Santa Lucia Mountains and extends east to the foothills known as the Cholame Hills.

Along the modest elevations the climate is generally quite warm, which makes many of its sites well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. Vineyard acreage has approached (if not already surpassed) 7,000 acres, with red Paso Robles wine varieties enjoying a slight lead. The primary Paso Robles white wines grown are Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Chenin Blanc. Zinfandel and Cabernet lead the reds in both quantity and overall quality.
