My Favorite 2000 Bordeaux

Bordeaux’s millennial vintage produced the most consistently high quality of red wine since 1990. The wines tend to be dense and full, with substantial palate impact and tannic clout; the best are likely to develop for 30 to 40 years or more. But there are also many wines that come across as a bit exotic, with somewhat roasted aromas of crystallized fruits, fruit syrup or chocolatey torrefaction. The best 2000s, which came to market at prices that appeared to be very high at the time, should hold their value due to the magic of “2000" on the label, but this vintage is not as consistently outstanding as 2005.
