Serious Beaujolais

A wine list by Josh Raynolds, Wine Writer, IWC
An often overlooked appellation of southern Burgundy, most of the red wines from Beaujolais are light, fruity and made for immediate drinking. The best wines, from 10 towns that are entitled to label their wines with the village name, are another matter. The best examples offer surprising complexity and can reward short to mid-term cellaring (say, 3 to 5 years), developing aromatic complexity and qualities similar to pinot noir. The high natural acidity of the gamay variety, from which all red Beaujolais is made, makes these wines ideal companions to food. These are among the most flexible wines at the table imaginable.
