Ben's Domestic Breakthroughs

A wine list by Ben Jordan, WHSF
I'm picky about American wine, but there are some that really sing to me. My breakthrough wines. They pull me out of the rut of tasting sameness that can dominate domestic buying. These wines break through the monotony, they inspire excitement, and they remind me that our soils are capable of producing world class wine. Some are relatively new to the wine scene, and some are the tried and true that continue to carry the torch for what (in my opinion of course) is outstanding wine.

2006 Varner Chardonnay Spring Ridge Vineyard Bee Block Santa Cruz Mountains

Ben Jordan, WHSF's Rating:
Tasting Date: 05/15/2008; Location: Tasting with Jim Varner
Ah the Bee. Luscious and rich. Yet it retains verve and clarity. How does that happen? Figure it out, and you have the key to great Chardonnay and wineries around the world will be knocking on your door. Interesting to no... more

2006 Varner Chardonnay Home Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains

This wine has consistently been my favorite as it seems to take on the best qualities of the other two. I love the complexity of flavors that echo the Amphitheater and the amplitude that we see in the Bee. There is a beau... more

2006 Varner Chardonnay Spring Ridge Vineyard Amphitheater Block Santa Cruz Mountains

Ben Jordan, WHSF's Rating:
Tasting Date: 05/15/2008; Location: Tasting with Jim Varner
In many vintages this is a little more linear than the other two, and it is always a fascinating wine that somehow straddles the imaginary line between California Chardonnay and Chablis. Clean, minty, and mineral, yet als... more

2006 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Demuth Vineyard Anderson Valley

Ben Jordan, WHSF's Rating:
Tasting Date: 04/07/2008; Location: Anthill Farms Winery
Probably showing the best in the lineup the day I tasted, its aromatics are quite refined and focused for a wine this young. The palate brings berries, herbs, tea and an expansive midpalate. A lot of length here, and the ... more

2006 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Peters Vineyard Sonoma Coast

Ben Jordan, WHSF's Rating:
Tasting Date: 04/07/2008; Location: Anthill Farms Winery
The shy subtlety of last year is replaced with more amplitude and denser fruit. There’s all sorts of clove and anise, making this a wine to stick with for as long as you can. I used to always ooh and ah over the Hirsch vi... more

2006 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Tina Marie Vineyard Green Valley

Ben Jordan, WHSF's Rating:
Tasting Date: 04/07/2008; Location: Anthill Farms Winery
While the Peter’s and Demuth seemed to flip flop in power from last year, the Tina Marie continues with its more flamboyant Russian River personality. While it is tame compared to some of the Syrah-like versions from the ... more

2006 Anthill Farms Syrah Windsor Oaks Vineyard Russian River Valley

Ben Jordan, WHSF's Rating:
Tasting Date: 04/07/2008; Location: Anthill Farms Winery
These guys are making their name with Pinot Noir, but they always try to make a wine that their “friends can afford to drink.” This Syrah was born of this goal, and after last year, I’d say they have a lot more friends. T... more

2006 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Comptche Ridge Vineyard Mendocino County

Ben Jordan, WHSF's Rating:
Tasting Date: 04/07/2008; Location: Anthill Farms Winery
One of the great examples of extreme ‘vineyarding’. Evidently you have to drive out to Mendocino and then back inland to get to this site. The nose is very perfumed, a perfect example of why people are excited about these... more

2006 Anthill Farms Pinot Noir Anderson Valley

Ben Jordan, WHSF's Rating:
Tasting Date: 04/07/2008; Location: Anthill Farms Winery
This is basically Demuth with a little Abbey Harris. This was the first wine they poured, and it jumped out immediately with the aromatics. Snappy and vigorous and with these black tea back notes that seem be an aromatic ... more
