Years ago, the Bianco family of Tenuta La Meridiana in Piedmonte decided that Barbera, often seen as a second class grape in a first class region, would be their focus. Rather than produce wines from many different varietals with mediocre results, their Barberas truly shine. The La Meridiana Barbera d'Asti "La Gagie" is one of the most well balanced, food friendly wines available in our Italian selection. Made to be a wine for everyday drinking, this bottling has soft acidity and round fruit flavors where many Barberas can be harsh or thin. It is aged in oak for 12 months (mostly used, I would guess) and has flavors of plum and cranberry with a slight touch of cedar. The long finish is elegant with deliciously round tannin. Chilled slightly, it would complement strong flavors like grilled beef or pork but will also be a treat with an everyday meal like chicken, rice and spring vegetables.
