Barmes-Buecher Brightens a November Night at BeauneHead's
Genevieve and Francois Barmes, of the terrific Alsace estate, Barmes-Buecher, were on the east coast most of last week. After retrieving them this Thursday evening at the station in Philadelphia after their day in New York, which included stops at Bouley, Nobu and Moore Brothers, we took them to our home, where 20 of our friends shared lots of their wines—and others’---and some chilli, coleslaw and cornbread, too.

Chestnuts, apricots; very complex nose. Delicious zippy fruit; creamy palette and long finish with apricot skins left on the tongue. Clearly some botrytis in this wine.

Pineapple; very sweet; zippy and long long finish with clear pinot gris character. (I purchased quite a few of these in the mid-1990s in New Jersey and consider this to be as good of a dessert wine as I’ve experienced; most SGNs are too much for me: costwise and tastewise.)

Similar caramel hints on the nose; slightly off dry w/ wonderful balance and the smoky/flinty/bacony palette that pinot gris from Alsace conveys. Long, dry finish.

Fine black cherries and spice; would have been really good even for a Burgundy (Rovani once wrote that the Barmes pinot noir was as good as any in Alsace). Very long and ready to age another decade.

Aromas of pine needles; fuller than the Steingrubler; more of the pine needle influence on the palate. Long finish. No question is a food wine.

Refined, restrained nose; wonderful palette in the mouth and excellent fruit/acid balance. Regal, with some sugar on the finish, but the acidity ultimately leaves a dry impression.

Much more personable nose of grapefruit (pink) and mandarin oranges; very fruity but dry and good body. Palette coating finish. Years left in it.

Deeper and more black fruity nose; less spice and more oak and much less evolved; long fruity finish; ripe tannins evident. Really a few years from being ready to appreciate.

Again pine needles and petrolly influences. Big wine; a little alcohol showing but excellent fruit, too. With food the slight heat showing would not be as evident.

Exuberant white grapefruit and classy aromatic and flavor profile; plenty of acidity; very enjoyable and very versatile wine, with several years of life left in it. Yum.
