A Week In Golfito

Several years ago, I took a fishing trip to the tiny village of Golfito located on the southwestern coast of Costa Rica in the Golfo Dulce, 40 miles from the Panama border. Golfito is known for its bananas, sportfishing and pristine beaches with some of the best surf in the world. We had cases of wine shipped to our tiny dock resort but were skeptical of what cuisine lay ahead. Then we met Rolph, an Austrian chef who [retired]to Golfito and worked wonders out of a one-man kitchen. These were the bacchanal winners of the week. If you can stomach the bone-chilling, single-engine plane ride over the mountains from San Jose to a gravel airstrip, go look up Rolph.
