Top Wines From Les Gobeltours

A wine list by Dan Packel, Writer
These are my favorite wines from the Les Gobeltours tasting in New York on November 10, 2008. This group of 14 small French producers has banded together to promote their excellent wines jointly.

Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Rouge

Dan's Rating:
Tasting Date: 11/10/2008; Location: Les Gobelotours Tasting
While Sancerre is generally known for Sauvignon Blanc, this 2006, made from Pinot Noir was an exciting find, offering abundant notes of bright red fruits.

2006 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu Les Chaillets

Dan's Rating:
Tasting Location: Les Gobelotours Tasting
This Viognier didn't have much residual sugar. It did have a surprising amount of acidity to balance the powerful aromatics.
Priced From: $125.00

2006 Domaine Sauzet Puligny Montrachet Les Combettes

Dan's Rating:
Tasting Date: 11/10/2008; Location: Les Gobelotours Tasting
Not as zippy as the Les Perriers bottling from the same vintage, but with an engaging nuttiness and round mouth fell.
Priced From: $119.95

2006 Le Clos du Caillou Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve

Dan's Rating:
Tasting Date: 11/10/2008; Location: Les Gobelotours Tasting
Old vines (70+ years) lend this Chateauneuf plenty of concentration and intensity. The wine has plenty of spice combined with red and black fruits, in addition to a smokiness on the finish. Tannins are softer than what I would have expected.

2006 Domaine Michel and Stephane Ogier Cote-Rotie Lancement

Dan's Rating:
Tasting Date: 11/10/2008
Plenty of power and intensity from this 100% Syrah wine. A nice hint of mint on the finish too.
Priced From: $23.99

2006 Domaine du Pas de l'Escalette Le Grand Pas

Dan's Rating:
Tasting Date: 11/10/2008; Location: Les Gobelotours Tasting
The most powerful of the wines from this Languedoc domaine. Still, the height of the vineyards (350 m above sea level) lends the wine plenty of freshness and brightness in addition to the tannins.
Average cost for wines on this list: $84.56
