After 20+ Years of Beauty Sleep

Here at WineAccess, we believe that there are few pleasures in life like drinking a bottle of perfectly cellared, perfectly aged Bordeaux. So when word got around that a sample of the 1995 Château Léoville Las Cases “Clos du Marquis” had arrived at HQ, of course everyone wanted a taste. As we prepared to pop the cork, the office seemed to double in size. We could’ve sworn there were even a few new faces in the room. Ted from accounting? When did he start?

The “oohs” and “aahs” began almost immediately as beautiful, deep ruby, brick-red, and garnet hues splashed the edges of our Riedel stemware. There was a lot to gush over. After 20+ years of beauty sleep, the 1995 “Clos du Marquis” had evolved past our furthest imagination — terrific intensity, cedar and tobacco spice, with blackcurrant fruit. As Robert Parker once put it, “this rich, high quality, gorgeously extracted wine could easily pass for a top classified growth.”

Indeed, the 1995 “Clos du Marquis” borders on Grand Cru Classé in more ways than one. Unlike most “second wines,” “Clos du Marquis” is culled entirely from its own designated vineyards, located in PRIME Saint-Julien terroir — directly next door to Second Growths Léoville Poyferré, Léoville Barton, and Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.

Robert Parker called “Clos du Marquis” “one of the finest second wines being made in Bordeaux.” Wine Spectator called the 1995 “wonderfully perfumed” and “powerful,” with “loads of fruit.” Back at HQ, our empty bottle said as much, but in fewer words.

The 1995 Château Léoville Las Cases Clos du Marquis Saint-Julien demonstrates a level of depth, complexity, and FEELING that can only result from extra innings in a cool, dark cellar. The best part is it’s ready to open as soon as it hits your doorstep. Direct from Saint-Julien. Don’t delay.
