100-Point Legend and His Near-Mythical Vintage

100-Point Legend and His Near-Mythical Vintage

Robert Parker famously called 2009 “the finest vintage I have tasted in 32 years of covering Bordeaux,” comparing the crop to 1899, 1929, 1949, and 1959 — the most extraordinary vintages of the last 120 years. A bold statement, but one that may be equalled by his admiration of Pierre Seillan, the legendary winemaker for Vérité. Seillan has racked up a whopping 13 perfect Robert Parker 100-point scores. Of Seillan’s founding of Verité, Parker said, “This is the flagship, luxury, world-class winery of the late Jess Jackson’s portfolio of small, high quality estates. Jackson convinced Bordelais Pierre Seillan to come to California from St.-Emilion to make these wines, and Verite has been one of the classics for well over a decade.” In 2003, Seillan turned full circle, to bring his talents back to Saint-Émilion when Jackson bought Château Vignot.  In the remarkable 2009 vintage, Seillan produced a showstopping wine — the dense, black-fruited, complex Château Vignot Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Bordeaux.

Pierre Seillan began his stellar winemaking career in the Loire Valley and Bordeaux. After meeting Napa legend Jess Jackson in the mid-1990s, Seillan was blown away by Jackson’s Sonoma County terroir, but even more impressed by what his California counterpart could create without the burden of French regulations. This impression led to a partnership that formed the world-renowned Vérité; perfect adoration from Parker soon followed.

The path of that partnership eventually led Seillan back to Bordeaux, thanks to the dual launch of Château Vignot and Château Lassègue in 2003. The 2009 Château Vignot Saint-Émilion Grand Cru gives reason for wine lovers to be thankful for this return. Seillan’s ability to cajole terroir-driven nuance from the estate’s Côte de Saint-Émilion-ensconced vines anchors this powerful, richly tannic selection, a feat that stamps his legacy on a historic Saint-Émilion vintage.
