    A Taste of History

At $30, Evidence Par Caroline is a shocking value—but don’t be fooled, there’s no shock value here. This innovative red blend is a taste of history, from the days when Bordeaux cemented its reputation by furtively blending ripe, cherry-scented grapes from the Rhône into their herbaceous reds. Inspired by Bordeaux’s secretive past and her family’s estates across France, winemaker Caroline Frey has reinvented the style, opting to bottle lush, full-bodied, liquid history.

We’ve already bought cases for our own cellars, and suggest you do too. Frey’s dynamic blend from two great estates—La Lagune in Bordeaux and Paul Jaboulet Aîné in the Rhône—weaves together elegance and power, complexity and purity, ripe fruit and savoriness, creating an entirely new profile altogether.

This style of wine—a blend of structured Cabernet and Merlot from Bordeaux and savory, smokey Rhône Syrah—literally cemented the reputation of Bordeaux in the 1800s, but it was made in secret, in the darkness of the cellar, and away from prying eyes. Before the advent of French wine laws, it was common practice to blend wine from the village of Tain l'Ermitage into one's Bordeaux before shipping it. One taste of this wine, and you will know why.

Caroline Frey grew up amongst the vines at her family’s vineyards in Champagne. After graduating as valedictorian from Bordeaux’s famed Institute of Oenology, Frey jumped straight to running her family’s newest estate: classified growth Chateau La Lagune in the Haut Medoc. Meanwhile, she was also running the family’s Rhône estate, Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné.

While the critics were captivated by her brilliance (Parker’s Wine Advocate called her Bordeaux an “essential drinking experience”), Frey wasn’t satisfied. That same year, Frey experimented, marrying Cabernet and Merlot from La Lagune with Syrah from Paul Jaboulet Aîné—specifically from 60-80-year-old vines planted in the biodynamically farmed Domaine de Thalabert in Crozes-Hermitage. The result stunned even Frey.

Domaine de Thalabert, the oldest vineyard in Crozes-Hermitage, lends complexity, intensity, and savoriness to the 2010 Evidence Par Caroline, while estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from La Lagune contribute richness, weight, and juicy dark fruit. Black cherry and black currant shine amidst layers of cracked peppercorn, game, tobacco, and spice.

Striking a perfect balance between generosity and restraint, the 2010 Evidence Par Caroline is both a fresh take and a classic; a marriage between two heralded estates that raises both to a new level.
