Sourcing Gets a Day Off
In the past few weeks, the sourcing team at WineAccess has been on fire. The guys out on the wine trail have locked down deal after knockout deal, ranging from high-profile blockbusters, to hidden bargain gems. If you’re up on our daily missives, you know what we’re talking about.
In most situations, nailing down these deals requires quite a bit of leg work — as in, trudging up 45 degree slopes in Stags Leap or Montalcino, followed by a barrage of calls and emails to secure the best prices for WineAccess members.
Every so often, however — when the stars align — deals come to us. It’s then that the sourcing guys get a day off to nurse sore hamstrings and pop a cork purely for enjoyment. Thanks to our friends at Anderson’s Conn Valley, today is one of those days.
Last weekend, we got a call from ACV about the 2011 “Prologue” Merlot. As they would explain, the “Prologue” was originally produced for the by-the-glass program at one of the nation’s top steakhouse groups. But, before the order was filled, the group’s wine director left to become head somm at one of NYC’s finest eateries.
In these situations — frequent occurrences in the wine business — when the director goes, so does his or her program. Long story short, Anderson’s Conn Valley had some calls to make.
Their first call went to WineAccess; they wouldn’t have to make another.
Sourced from the estate vineyards and a pristine site in Sonoma, the 2011 “Prologue” is deep purple/garnet in the glass. Aromas of dark chocolate, plum, cinnamon, and dried flowers waft from the nose. More luscious dark fruit on the palate, where tannins are silky and fine-grained. Overall, a powerful yet well-balanced and approachable offering that would have paired beautifully with the steakhouse’s 40 oz. aged porterhouse.
But that steakhouse’s loss is our gain. What was $15 by-the-glass at the restaurant is now just $13.50/bottle for WineAccess members… while 1200 bottles last. Make this your go-to wine of 2017, as gift from Todd Anderson. As for the sourcing team, they get some much deserved R&R.
