Matthiasson Nails a “Once In a Lifetime” Vintage

Some wines have everything going for them: A legendary vintage. A top-flight vineyard. A master winemaker. Almost a decade of bottle age.

But very rarely do those wines go for a reasonable price.

The 2013 Convexity Cabernet Sauvignon hails from a phenomenal vintage that Robert Parker declared to be a “game-changer.” It was made by 2014 San Francisco Chronicle Winemaker of the Year Steve Matthiasson—one of Napa’s most admired craftsmen—and hails from the Red Hen Vineyard, which supplies Mayaan Koschitzky’s La Pelle wines, not to mention ones from Ashes & Diamonds and Laird.

Matthiasson launched his consulting firm in 2002. His reputation quickly grew in Napa Valley, landing him gigs at Araujo, Spottswoode, Dalla Valle, Chappellet, Rudd, David Arthur, and Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars. In what seemed like an overnight success story, he became one of the brightest stars in viticulture and winemaking.

In naming him Winemaker of the Year, the San Francisco Chronicle ventured a prediction: “If one person stands to rewrite the trajectory of California wine—in Napa's luxurious heart, no less—it is Steve Matthiasson.” Vinous’ Antonio Galloni raved about his talents, calling him “one of the top viticulturists in Napa Valley.” It’s no surprise that his wines are the darlings of establishments like Gramercy Tavern, Eleven Madison Park, The French Laundry, and Jean-Georges.

With the 2013 Convexity, Matthiasson absolutely NAILED the kind of elegance that Cabernet lovers are accustomed to paying $150 for. Made in what Decanter called a “once in a lifetime” vintage, stunning after nearly a decade in the cellar, and backed by the viticultural and winemaking chops that estates like Dalla Valle, Ashes and Diamonds, and Spottswoode have relied on, this is a “mic-drop” wine.
