93+ Point Rarity from Parker’s “Greatest Vintage in 37 Years”

93+ Point Rarity from Parker’s “Greatest Vintage in 37 Years”

Robert Parker dubbed Napa’s 2013 vintage “the greatest vintage in 37 years.” For HALL Wines, it yielded “Coeur” — a stunning, powerhouse Cabernet Parker called “full-bodied, opulent and fleshy,” before pinning on 93 points, which sold out swiftly when we first offered it. HALL stands tall among the steadily growing number of allocation-only wineries in Napa Valley, appealing to hungry collectors with members-only wines from their stunning LEED Gold-certified, gravity-flow winery in St. Helena. Dozens of their wines have appeared on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 lists, while over 140 HALL Wines have earned scores between 90 and 100 points. That makes each vintage, especially those that have been aging in HALL’s cellars like this 2013 “Coeur” Cabernet, a rarity.

Everything owners Craig and Kathryn Hall touch has a flourish and a style all their own. Kathryn ran the growing operations for her family business in Mendocino when she met and married Craig, the real-estate mogul. Together in 1995 they bought Sacrashe, a 60-acre parcel in Rutherford above Auberge du Soleil. Today, that first purchase remains the crown jewel of HALL’s vineyard portfolio, a site that has produced more than a few 100-point wines.

The Halls surround themselves with talent. We’ve followed winemaker Steve Leveque from his days at Robert Mondavi and Chalk Hill, since before he’d won fame for authoring three 100-point wines, and also President Mike Reynolds since his days as winemaker/general manager at Schramsberg. During a private 2-hour tour in April, Leveque told us, “2013 was an awesome vintage.” And “awesome” also describes the grapes from the HALL Estate Bergfeld Vineyard that form the core of this 2013 “Coeur” Cabernet, along with additional fruit from nearby sites in the St. Helena AVA, all planted on gravelly soils with great drainage, which Leveque says yields “a real dark-fruited profile.” Parker describes the “Coeur” as a “full-bodied, opulent and fleshy” Cabernet, a wine that can be “drunk now in its exuberant youthfulness” or cellared “two decades or more.” We couldn’t agree more.
