2014: A vintage for Burgundy Purists

We thrive on undervalued vintages, and we live for when wineries turn the page and clear cellars of underappreciated vintages for the Next Big Thing. So we were waiting in the shadows with checkbooks in hand, ready to pounce when growers and importers decided it was time to move out the 2014 Red Burgundies for the incoming ‘15s, making it a buyer’s market for us.

And then our old pal, Steve Tanzer, out of the blue, decided to write ANOTHER vintage report for the 2014s just 15 months after his original assessment. Steve brought attention back to the classic 2014 Red Burgundies, calling it “a vintage for Burgundy purists” and putting the Klieg lights full-blast back onto the vintage. Let’s just say that Steve’s thoroughness helped us lose out on a few hundred cases of Red Burg. No hard feelings, Steve.

Luckily, we had already advanced far enough in our negotiations to hold onto 20 cases of one of our favorite 2014s from anywhere in Burgundy, the Givrys from Domaine Joblot.

In her third vintage at the helm, it’s clear that Juliette Joblot has inherited the diligence in the cellar that contributed to her father Jean-Marc Joblot’s legend. Joblot wines are focused, refined, full of charm, packed with rich flavors, brilliant spice notes, and finesse. Just 29 years old, Juliette is quick to point out that wines from Givry all too often take a back seat to their heralded neighbors to the north in the Côte de Beaune. With this 2014 “Clos des Cellier aux Moines,” boosted by Tanzer’s vintage praise, Juliette is well on her way to fixing that.

The 2014 Domaine Joblot Givry Premier Cru “Clos des Cellier aux Moines” is from a 5-acre walled vineyard that is considered one of the finest of the Givry appellation. Joblot’s parcel faces south and comes from 35-year-old vines. Bright medium red. Pure yet shy nose that hints at red cherry liqueur, minerals, licorice, and mint. The palate is large and expansive while being fresh and elegant too. Finishes with noble tannins and outstanding length and grip. A great, great value.
