To Kalon: Napa’s Grand Cru Crown Jewel
Just 210 cases of this Janzen family’s 2014 To Kalon were produced. We managed to secure 360 bottles bottles, and at this price point this is the highest-rated Parker To Kalon Cabernet of the vintage. Oakville’s To Kalon Vineyard is one of the greatest — if not the greatest vineyard — in all of Napa Valley. Andy Beckstoffer owns 89 prime acres of this iconic site, and from them came this 97-point 2014 Janzen Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, which Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate hailed it as “rich, opulent, and seductive,” and packed with “a core of crème de cassis, baked blackberries and blueberry pie.” Napa Cabernet like this doesn’t come around every day.
The critical acclaim for the 2014 Janzen To Kalon continued with Wine Enthusiast and James Suckling. Wine Enthusiast called the 2014 “appropriately bold, brawny and big-boned,” with a “soft and supple texture,” while James Suckling hailed the wine’s richness and balance, writing, “incredibly spicy with lots of ripe fruit, but this isn’t overdone. Full and intense with a clove and berry aftertaste.”
Winery owners Claus and Diane Janzen have been making wine in the Valley since 1993. After a decade working at Caymus, Claus hung out his own shingle and has honored a deep commitment to making world-class wines since then. The Janzens were an early client of Andy Beckstoffer’s and make vineyard-designated bottlings from two Beckstoffer vineyards: Missouri Hopper and To Kalon. The Janzens’ To Kalon vines are located on the sloping, southern side of the vineyard, which provides excellent exposure and drainage. The 2014 To Kalon Beckstoffer Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the best of the Janzen portfolio and is one of the most compelling Cabernets we’ve tasted this year.
