Top-Notch Terroir, Blue-Chip Talent, Spectacular Vintage

Canonica a Cerreto boasts a world-renowned vineyard site in the heart of Tuscany, and a winemaker Food & Wine called a leader of Italy’s “generation next.” That makes their 2015 Sandiavolo a massive all-around win—one that delivers a combination of vintage, terroir, and talent at a price that doesn’t come around very often.

The Sandiavolo can light up a room and bring life to the table. It’s a Tuscan stunner that can excite both novices and experts alike—especially since today’s offering comes from the epic 2015 vintage, one that Antonio Galloni hailed as a "gorgeous” and ”radiant.”

Winemaker Marco Bernabei has consulted for luminaries like Mormoraia, Castello di Corbara and I Sodi, but he’s more than just a hired hand: He’s also an agronomist who, when he’s not in the cellar, focuses on finding and reviving vines of lesser-known indigenous Italian grape varieties like Vernaccia, Grechetto, and Verdello. He’s also the son of Franco Bernabei (aka “Mr. Sangiovese”), who put heavyweights like Selvapiana, Fontodi, and Felsina on the map.

The Canonica a Cerreto property dates back to the 11th century, when church leaders in Siena decided to build an abbey there. The monastery’s original cellar still exists, although the wine is now made in a new one built in 2003. The current owners, unsatisfied with the quality of the estate’s grapes, replanted most of the 21 hectares starting in 1998,

The Sandiavolo consists of 85% Sangiovese, bolstered by 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot.  The grapes are picked by hand, pressed, fermented in stainless-steel tanks, and then aged in French barriques. It’s approachable now, but has the vitality to age for a decade or more.
