Dutton-Goldfield’s Powerful Russian River Pinot

Dutton-Goldfield’s Powerful Russian River Pinot

In the Russian River Valley’s stunning but low-yield 2015 vintage, Dan Goldfield raised the bar for the umpteenth time, producing a sensationally deep, dark, chewy and “mouthwatering” Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir that Wine Spectator went wild for, laying on 92 points. Since Goldfield began crafting Russian River Pinot Noir almost 30 years ago, his small production off prized Dutton Ranch has ranked among Sonoma’s three or four most coveted buys. 2015 ushered in no exception: for $33 per bottle — 27% off the release price — Wine Access clients can sample this paean to Goldfield’s genius in the cellar and Dutton’s legendary work on his cool-climate hillsides. We hoped to get more of the dark ruby, terrifically charged-up 2015 Dutton Goldfield Russian River Pinot Noir, but with yields down nearly 50%, we took what we could get. Just 100 cases. Blowing away most of the $50+ competition, this is a case-buy for those who move fast.

Goldfield is arguably one of the most (if not the most) brilliant Pinot Noir makers in the Russian River Valley. Like all serious Pinot Noir makers, Goldfield is obsessed with Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. He’s the first to admit that while Russian River can go toe to toe with Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin when it comes to ripeness, it’s only in certain vintages that his Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir achieves the balance and mineral length of the best from the Côte de Nuits. 2015 was one such vintage, leaving Goldfield’s head spinning as he walked the rows of Dutton’s famous spots like Freestone Hill, Galante, and Sanchietti.

The 2015 crop in Sonoma County wasn’t just small — it was a historically low-yield harvest. Budbreak was early, following February rains that finally broke a three-year drought cycle. Temperatures ticked into the 90s during the afternoons in September, before plummeting into the 50s after nightfall. The resulting immense concentration in the grapes has us thinking this might be Goldfield’s most powerful Dutton Ranch Pinot to date. You don’t want to miss out.
