The Alpha and Omega of Greek Sauvignon Blanc

We’ve dug up some gems in Greece this year, and WineAccess members have noticed. It turns out you weren’t the only ones paying attention. The success we had introducing members to wines we brought back from the island of Santorini and the small villages of the Peloponnese also caught the eye of Greek’s Alpha dog.

Angelos Iatridis had a circuitous route to becoming Greece’s most honored winemaker. Angelos’ father was a pastry chef, as was his father and his father before him. This heritage stoked Angelos’ passion for gastronomy, and when it came time for Angelos to choose a university to pursue his chemistry degree, naturally he chose the Université of Bordeaux. It was there, in the epicenter of the wine world, that Angelos combined his passion for gastronomy and his proficiency in chemistry into the only profession where both skills mesh perfectly — wine.

In 1997, Angelos created Alpha Estate in the Amyndeon plateau of Macedonia, the Greek wine region with the coolest climate. The appellation rests on a plateau some 1,700-2,300 feet above level, with alluvial soil made up of sandy clay over a bedrock of limestone. Harsh winters and moderate summers with low humidity create a perfect environment to grow Sauvignon Blanc with a true-to-form character of zesty, citrus fruits and crunchy mineral flavors. When done right — as in Alpha’s 2016 — it’s like Sancerre crossed with Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc.

Angelos Iatridis and Alpha Estate are no strangers to critical acclaim. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate dismissed the winery still being considered a “comer” — “It's fair to end that talk. They have arrived and are making terrific wines.” Numerous scores of 90 points and above back up The Wine Advocate’s assessment of “one of Greece’s best wineries.” Wine & Spirits named Alpha one of its Wineries of the Year in 2013. Wine Enthusiast named Angelos one of its finalists for Winemaker of the Year in 2014. Decanter Magazine dropped a couple of gold medals on Alpha.

Crystalline light yellow with green tints. Lively nose of kumquat, passion fruit, grapefruit, honeysuckle, and litchi. Round and creamy palate that is counterbalanced with crisp and crackling acid structure. Steady and balanced finish with plenty of finesse. Fantastic Sauvignon Blanc that will drink well over the next 5 years.

Today we’re proud to offer cool-climate, high-elevation Sauvignon Blanc that perfectly connects the Old World to the New. Alpha Estate is the most celebrated winery in all of Greece, and today it’s available for first time on WineAccess. $19.99 for today only. See what everyone is talking about.
