Wine Spectator’s 96-99 point “truly rare” 2016 vintage

The Costières de Nîmes lies at the southern tip of the Rhône Valley, a place where the native terroir and the Mediterranean climate translate to herby and gorgeously ripe Grenache and Syrah. Jancis Robinson MW wines from the area “very polished and great value,” and the Saveurs du Temps comes from Wine Spectator’s 96-99 point “truly rare” 2016 vintage.

Any pilgrimage to the southern Rhône must include visits to red wine meccas Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas—but at least a day should be reserved for the other side of the river, where Roman Ruins and bustling market squares overflow with locals drinking ruby reds grown and made nearby.  As soon as the sun hits these busy squares, the vendors, as well as the natives sitting at cafes switch from black coffee to local wines like the Saveurs du Temps—wines grown in the lavender-blanketed and olive tree-studded countryside of the Costières de Nîmes.

As the southernmost appellation in the Rhône, the Costières de Nîmes enjoys a Mediterranean climate—complete with summertime heat that reaches well above 100°F—which results in beautifully ripened fruit. Instead of the concrete tanks and foudres of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saveurs du Temps is aged for eight months in stainless steel, which preserves every iota of that Midi-ripened Grenache and Syrah.

A sip of the Saveurs du Temps is a nonstop flight to the South of France: a ripe, sun-kissed, and approachable red to be stacked by the case and enjoyed with magret de canard, steak tartare, or briny olive tapenade. Or, as the locals lounging at the cafés in the Place aux Herbes in Uzès would prescribe, to be sipped while watching the world go by.
