Premier Cru White Burgundy Elegance for a Village Price

A bottle of old-school, gorgeous Côte d’Or craftsmanship that can be had for a rare old-fashioned deal, the lush waves of pear, buttercream, Brazil nut, and toast that the Domaine Thierry et Pascale Matrot Mersault delivers make it a pure delight.

Wine Spectator lauded the 2017’s structure, while Jeb Dunnuck set it apart from the crowd in a review that called it “pure class” and “rivetingly focused,” concluding: “it’s a beautiful, beautiful wine.” We’d expect nothing less from Domaine Matrot, one of the greatest and most celebrated producers in Blagny, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet.

Drink enough Meursault and you start to detect the distinct personality of each vineyard. Perrières is as direct, linear, and intense as a math Ph.D. Les Charmes has the charm, vivacity, and acidic verve of an Upper East Side socialite. Les Genevrières is a measured balance of restraint and opulence—a true French blueblood.

When it comes to finding value, Burghounds look first to Les Chevalières, one of the greatest lieux-dits in Meursault, esteemed for its ability to produce stunning wines that are the equal of nearby premier cru plots, but cost half as much.

Counting Luchets, Meix Chavaux, and Tesson as famous neighbors north of the village, Les Chevalières is home to 45-year-old vines and shallow, stony soils with a limestone substrate. In the hands of the Matrot sisters, the vineyard expresses a fresh, light-bodied, mineral counterpoint to the mellow richness of Meursault, with its classic melon and lemon curd notes and creamy texture.

Now in the hands of the estate’s fourth generation, the domaine blends tradition with their own unique approach, never afraid to upend conventional wisdom. Organic farming gives this wine its natural, fresh liveliness while aging in 40% new oak lends richness, warmth, and spice—an offer that should prove irresistible to white Burgundy bargain hunters.
